We started the Heifer Portland blog back in Feb 09 as a medium to communicate with our volunteers and supporters in our community. Since then the blog has evolved into a sophisticated design that is admired by Heifer International headquarters and other volunteer groups around the world. Heifer Portland believes in the power of social media and how it can affect the way we receive and send information.
The nameyourcause.com BlogWorld contest validates it. We first heard of the contest on Twitter and decided to enter because Kompolt, the sponsor of the contest, gave not-so-well-known nonprofits organizations a platform to be recognized. We used Twitter and Facebook to campaign our cause and supporters stood with us. The result, Heifer International gained recognition not only as a nonprofit organization with a great cause but also as a social media savvy group that is in touch with today's communication medium. Chris Brogan's new book Trust Agent says it best -- "Using the Web to Build Influence, Improve Reputation and Earn Trust." We're doing it.
Heifer International has been around for over 65 years. However, Heifer Portland have been in the new/social media community for only a few years. We attended the Gnomedex 9.0 conference earlier this year and the BlogWorld and New Media Expo in October to develop our skills and talents to increase awareness about worldwide hunger and poverty through social media. Since Feb 09, we've grown from a small grassroots volunteer group in Portland into a respected contributor in the social media community and around the world.
